Palm oil and why we choose NOT to use it

Deforestation - Habitat degradation -  Climate Change

In a nut shell (or should I say a palm fruit) these are the 3 main reasons we choose NOT to use palm oil in our soaps and skincare products.

Yes, it’s true that Palm oil is natural and derived from the palm fruit

Yes, it’s true that Palm oil is beneficial for skin health due to its nutrient-dense profile

Yes, it’s true that the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil, (RSPO) was set up to create a system for certifying sustainably grown palm oil, in order to provide better working conditions, better wages, and foster local discussions and input on their impact on local and native land. However, its standards do not ban deforestation or destruction of peatlands for the development of oil palm plantations.

BUT it’s also true that:

Rainforests in Malaysia and Indonesia are cut down and are replaced with African oil palm plantations

Palm oil production has become associated with deforestation and has endangered wildlife like orangutans, pygmy elephants, clouded leopards, and certain species of birds

The rapidly expanding palm oil trade, is the single greatest threat facing Orang-utans today. Rainforests are being cleared at the rate of 300 football fields per hour to make way for oil palm plantations.

Deforestation for palm oil production also contributes significantly to climate change. The removal of the native forests often involves the burning of invaluable timber and remaining forest undergrowth, emitting immense quantities of smoke into the atmosphere and making Indonesia the third highest greenhouse gas emitter in the world.

What also sucks is that even if you were to make an informed choice and choose to avoid Palm Oil in your cosmetics, there are many ingredients that are derived from palm oil such as stearic acid, sls and many emulsifiers and you wouldn't even know it by reading the label.

In food products,it's much the same. Food manufacturers can choose to use the word ‘vegetable oil’ in their ingredient list even if the product contains palm oil.

We hate this deception and it's one of the reasons we choose transparency in our products and our labels list exactly what's in our products. How can a consumer make an informed choice if their choice is taken away from them ?

So, whilst Palm oil itself isn’t ‘bad for you’, we think that the massive destruction caused by humans destroying our forests are ‘bad for us’ and we choose to avoid using it all together.
