Oil cleansing and why we love it

After being hesitant of putting a hand full of oil directly on my skin I have taken the plunge and started the oil cleansing method and I have to say... I really do love it ! My skin is so soft afterwards I find I don't need any additional moisturiser and I wake up in the morning with smooth skin. So many commercially cleansers strip the oil out of our skin, leaving our largest organ trying to repair itself by replacing the oil stripped away. This leaves us in a cycle of being tight and dry followed by the inevitable oil slick. Each time we strip the oil away, our skin over-compensates for the lack of moisture by creating more oil. This is where the oil cleansing method comes in to save the day. Put simply, “oil dissolves oil”

The basic concept of the oil cleansing method is that the oil used to massage your skin will dissolve the oil that has hardened with impurities and found itself stuck in your pores. The steaming process will open your pores, allowing the oil to be easily removed. It’s important to not be afraid of applying oil to your face. Remember that oil, alone will not bring you blemishes. These are a result of several different factors including hormones, bacteria, dead skin cells. Your skin naturally produces oil because it needs it to function properly.

How do you cleanse with oil ?

Step 1 -  Apply a small amount of oil to the palm of your hand and gently massage into dry skin. You do not need to remove your make up first. The oil will remove your foundation and a good oil cleanser will also remove your eye make up. The trick here is to massage your skin is upward strokes for a good 2- 5 minutes until the oil is warm. Be gentle around your eye area. If you need to use a cotton pad to remove stubborn eye makeup and mascara.  As you massage your face you may feel gritty bits which is the gunk releasing from your pores.

Step 2. Now fill your sink with hot steamy water. Place your washcloth in the water, rinse well and apply washcloth to your face. The water needs to be warm enough to further soften your pores and remove the oil.  Allow it to stay on your face until it has cooled. Then wipe the oil gently away and rinse the washcloth well in hot, running water and repeat two or three more times.
If your skin feels tight afterwards you may need a small drop of the oil patted over damp skin. This will provide the necessary lubrication to keep your skin from over-compensating in oil production.

The oil cleansing method should be done regularly, but not too frequently. It will take a bit of a trial and error to find how many days a week suit you but a good place to start is 2-3 times a week.  Also, don't be surprised if you find you've unblocked an oil flow for the first few days. Once you remove the old plugs from your pores, they will begin functioning properly again. It's well worth persisting with oil cleansing for a few weeks and you'll probably never go back.
